Samenvatting
Jan Brandes was born in 1743 in Bodegraven. As a Lutheran minister, he traveled to the Dutch East Indies in 1778 with his wife. His son Jan was born in Batavia, but his wife died there. When he had acquired a modest capital, he left for Ceylon in 1785 with his little son. Traveling further, he spent a year at the Cape of Good Hope before returning to the Netherlands. However, he soon left for Sweden, where he settled as a landlord, remarried and died in 1808.
Brandes has drawn throughout his life. The Rijksmuseum owns several sketchbooks and individual drawings by his hand. The collection is of inestimable historical value.
