Samenvatting
Jan Brandes was born in 1743 in Bodegraven. As a Lutheran minister, he traveled to the Dutch East Indies in 1778 with his wife. His son Jan was born in Batavia, but his wife died there. When he had acquired a modest capital, he left for Ceylon in 1785 with his little son. Traveling further, he spent a year at the Cape of Good Hope before returning to the Netherlands. However, he soon left for Sweden, where he settled as a landlord, remarried and died in 1808.
Brandes has drawn throughout his life. The Rijksmuseum owns several sketchbooks and individual drawings by his hand. The collection is of inestimable historical value. The preacher signed 'from life'. He recorded what he saw around him: his family, his house, people on the street, the church, slaves, life on board VOC ships and numer...
