Beschrijving	Rebound in modern vellum, decorated endpapers, (22),1-580,(20),(16) pages, 8vo Extremely rare copy of this 1679 edition of Westermans classic 'sea postil', which served as a spiritual and practical manual for sailors, merchants, and soldiers, especially on board of the ships of the East-India Company. This bestselling book is a monumental work of 17th-century Dutch maritime and religious literature. Originally published in 1631, the book was written by Adam Westerman, a Frisian minister from Workum. It was compiled to provide moral guidance to men at sea, who were often away from a church for several years. The Groote Christelijcke Zee-vaert became so popular that it went through approximately 30 editions, many of which were literally read to pieces in the harsh conditions of a ship. This copy is the only one known of this edition; the STCN does not mention this specific edition by Michiel de Groot.
