Beschrijving
Contemporary half cloth with marbled boards, 149 engraved plates by N. van der Meer after Jacobus Buijs, (iv),124,(vi),132,[ii],110,(111-112 index) pages, 12mo (circa 12,5 x 8 cm). Dutch edition of Gellert's famous fable book, first published by Pieter Meijer in Amsterdam from 1772 to 1774. The series of plates by Jacobus Buijs (1724-1801), beautifully illustrating each fable, are still important for our understanding of Dutch society and culture of the 18th century. Fabeln und Erzählungen was originally published in 1746-1748 and soon after translated into other European languages. Gellert modelled his fables on those of Fontaine, and several were set to music, most notably by Beethoven. Gellerts fales were translated in verse from the German by B. de Bosch, J. Lutkeman, P. Meyer, J.P. Broeckhoff, H.J. Roullaud, L. Pater and J. Lublink jr.
