The Ethiopian-born, New York-based artist Julie Mehretu (1970) is considered one of the most exciting new discoveries in the contemporary American painting scene. Her work has been featured in numerous international exhibitions at renowned institutions, including the Museum of Modern Art in New York in 2002.
In her large-format paintings and drawings, Mehretu combines computer-generated architectural drawings, (city) plans, gestural signs, and colored geometric forms into multi-layered, futuristic-looking pictorial worlds where historical and fictional landscapes collide. The artist draws on diverse sources, alluding to the geometric abstractions of Kazimir Malevich and Wassily Kandinsky, referencing graffiti art and comic strips, and incorporating press photographs of unrest and uprising...
