Samenvatting
Lviv's photographic traditions date back to ancient times; names such as Eder, Trzemeski, Mikolasch, Lenkiewicz, ? witkowski, Neumann, and Mierzecka are well known to photography historians. It's also worth noting that it was in Lviv, back in the 19th century, in 1895 to be precise, that the first Polish monthly devoted to photographic and reproductive art, "Przegl? d Fotograficzny," appeared.

It's fair to say that the publication of the beautiful album "Lviv in Photography 1860-2006" a few years ago is a continuation and a nod to the bygone era, when the city was still part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire and later the Second Polish Republic. Author Irina Kotlobulatova has compiled a selection of 290 photographs spanning 150 years, from Joseph Eder's early panoramas, preserved primarily in the Lviv Historical Museum and the Stefanyk Lviv Scientific Library, to photographs from just before World War I, the interwar period, and the 1940s and 1950s.
