He has been called an obscure stranger, one of the most creative, mysterious, and recognizable artists of the 17th century: Michael Sweerts. A painter, a mediator, a teacher, and a deeply religious man, yet almost always described as an outsider who did not associate with the Dutch and Flemish artists in Rome where he resided, nor did he join the official institutions of his time.
Due to his stay in Belgium, the Netherlands, and Italy, Sweerts' works unite artistic and cultural elements from Northern and Southern Europe. Sweerts paints people from the street with sympathy and respect, but also paints portraits of wealthy gentlemen. Moreover, throughout his life he was interested in art education: many of his paintings feature studios with painting apprentices. Inspiration often came from c... (Lees verder)lassical antiquity. Most of his paintings have secular subjects, but he also created a number of history pieces. Sweerts was also a talented printmaker, who depicted human types for instruction and entertainment. Nearly 60 paintings and etchings are reproduced in Michael Sweerts. This makes the book an extraordinary overview. Exceptional paintings from private and public collections are reproduced for the first time. Recent research results are also published for the first time, and the differences in techniques between Northern and Southern European painters are examined in detail.
