Samenvatting | The admirals of the armored fleets required no additional arguments in favor of creating squadrons of identical ships. In terms of supply, maintenance, crew training, and joint maneuvering, such a squadron would provide a rare advantage to any heterogeneous force. However, in an era of rapid military technology development, such as in the late 19th century, this was only possible with the relatively simultaneous laying down and construction of a large series of identical ships. Taking such a step in a situation where views on the future of the armored ship were regularly changing proved risky – one could end up committing a squadron of a poorly chosen ship type. However, in the early 1890s, The French agreed that five ships should be built to a single specification, but instead of se... (Lees verder)lecting one of the submitted designs, they chose to lay down five armored hulls for five different designs. The result was immediately dubbed the Flotte d'échantillons, literally "fleet of models." This work recounts the history of these five ships, which, while possessing similar characteristics, actually had far more differences than similarities among themselves. |
