Len Arlington was captured near Dunkirk but escaped on the march to Germany and then, in civilian clothing, lived as a Frenchman in the Lille region working with the Resistance. The Germans laid elaborate traps for him but he always got away. On one occasion he even 'inspected' a German infantry battalion parading on a French road. He was at liberty for longer than any other British soldier of the war, from just after Dunkirk until the Liberation, and ...
