It is difficult to imagine today that the artistic value of color photography was still controversial well into the 1980s. William Eggleston s pioneering exhibition at The Museum of Modern Art,New York, in 1976, generated much scorn and confusion, as spectators struggled to accept his rather ordinary-looking color pictures depicting Southern life as art. Early photographs by Stephen Shore, Helen Levitt, Joel Meyerowitz, and others received similarly ambivalent reviews. But as color processes improved and diverse approaches to the color art photograph were explored, the floodgates could not be closed.
