|An account of how a timid and unaggressive young man of 19 in 1939 was transformed by the inexorable pressures of World War II into a competent infantryman. The author served in two infantry battalions in the campaign in Europe from D-Day to VE day, from Normandy to Germany. The book provides a personal account of the war, with extracts from wartime newspaper reports, radio broadcasts and speeches.
