Beschrijving | Translated from the French. 2nd corrected and annotated impression. 8: [12], 536, [8]. With engraved titlepage and three full page engravings (all unsigned) by Jan Luyken. This copy from the library of the Dutch chemist Dr. A. T. P. van Son from Schoonhoven, acquired on the occasion of his promotion in 1898 at the Philipps-University in Marburg (Germany). Lit.: Klaversma/Hannema, Jan en Caspar Luyken te boek gesteld, 838; Hoogendoorn, Bibliography of the Exact Sciences in the Low Countries, LEME01 (nr.2); Very rare second edition (the Short Title Catalogue Netherlands mentions one copy in Amsterdam University Library and another copy is known from the Jan Luyken collection in the Amsterdam Museum) of the Dutch translation of Cours de chimie (1675) by Nicolas Lémery (1645-1715). In 1683 the first Dutch edition was published by Jan ten Hoorn in Amsterdam; this second edition came out in 1691. Other Dutch editons of this popular course on chemistry were published in 1704 and 1725. Lémery did not concern himself much with theoretical speculations, but holding chemistry to be a demonstrative science, confined himself to the straightforward exposition of facts and experiments. In consequence, his lecture-room was filled with people of all sorts, anxious to hear a man who shunned the barren obscurities of the alchemists, and did not regard the quest of the philosopher's stone and the elixir of life as the sole end of his science. His Cours de chymie (1675) was published in many editions in different languages, and for a century it maintained its reputation as a standard work in the field of chemistry. |
