Samenvatting	For Merry Alpern, this project was a natural outgrowth of her spending an inordinate amount of time in stores, mostly women's clothing stores. She noticed other women in the stores in the middle of the day, all day, every day. In particular, the group dressing rooms seemed to offer a combination of camaraderie and anonymity. Trying on clothes is an opportunity for self-examination, fantasy, and opinions from others - sometime solicited, sometimes not. With a video camera concealed inside her bag, Alpern took hours of footage, without ever looking through a viewfinder. Later she examined the footage, to isolate moments and take stills. In this photographic essay, she dives into the realm of the objects that cover our social body, and incorporates the visual ethnography of American shopping.
